Love Slow Fashion Show
Love Slow Fashion Show – Friday 14th February, 6pm to 8pm, London Newcastle Project Space, 28 Redchurch St, E2 7DP
On Friday, Valentine’s Day, a team of 15 young people will be running their own Slow Fashion Show to showcase their creations, and will be taking on make-up and hair, modelling, styling, photography and hosting – with a little help from some friends.
Thrifty Couture is an Islington-based social enterprises that saves clothing from land-fill, reconstructs these garments and markets them to eco-conscious clients.
They have been running a series of after-school clothes up-cycling workshops called “Kool Kouture”, with Islington school children from 11 to 14 years of age for five months.
The classes teach young people simple techniques of up-cycling clothing, and get them interested in reusing as well as acquiring basic sewing and reconstructing skills.
They have learnt to visualise, create simple patterns, cut and sew straight, drape and embellish. Since last October, they have made handbags, hoodie monsters, run their own Christmas market stall to sell their creations, and put together a collection of over 40 pieces.
There will be prizes including paid internships and a full apprenticeship with Thrifty Couture for the older participants. For the younger participants, Brother has gifted a sewing machine and local businesses have donated books on clothes recycling and slow fashion. Benefit Cosmetics have given make-up, and GetMoreFood is supplying Valentine’s Day refreshments.
